Honkai: Nexus Anima Trait Positioning Guide

All combat and meta information on this page is based on Evolution Test beta data and may change before the global release.

Understanding the Three Rows

Nexus Battle formations in Honkai: Nexus Anima divide the field into Front, Mid, and Back rows. Each Anima Trait determines optimal row placement and combat behavior during automated battles. Incorrect positioning wastes unit potential—a Back row Blaster placed Front receives increased enemy focus and dies quickly, while a Front Protector placed Back fails to absorb damage meant for your Strikers.

Standard formations allocate two to three Front slots, one to two Mid slots, and three to four Back slots depending on stage unlocks. Balance rows alongside Aspect synergies rather than treating positioning as an afterthought. Our Traits explained page defines each role in detail.

Front Row Traits

Strikers belong in Front row as melee DPS units absorbing partial enemy aggro while dealing consistent physical damage. Felinoxie, Bunmareen, Scorscythe, and Camcorgi exemplify Front Striker placement. Protectors anchor Front row as tanks with high durability—Bladehound and Hoppelon are premier Protectors for War and Light teams respectively.

Never place Blasters, Cherubim, Masterminds, or Hotheads in Front row unless exploiting specific gimmick builds. Front row units should expect incoming damage and either mitigate it through Protector stats or trade efficiently through Striker damage output before falling.

Mid Row Traits

Explorers and Controllers typically occupy Mid row. Explorers like Taileep and Olivesper provide utility effects that benefit from flexible positioning without requiring extreme durability or range. Controllers including Damasque and C'locked disrupt enemy formations with stuns and displacement from a relatively safe central position.

Mid row receives moderate enemy pressure, making it suitable for support-combat hybrids that are neither pure tanks nor pure back-line casters. When Mid slots are limited, prioritize Controllers in stages with dangerous enemy formations and bench Explorers during pure combat encounters.

Back Row Traits

Blasters operate exclusively from Back row, unleashing ranged attacks safely. Cumulon, Magisdrake, Cinechel, and Inkifoal belong here. Cherubim healers including Lumehart and Plumelune stay Back row to sustain Front units without exposing themselves. Masterminds like Faeflux and Mimoo buff allies from Back positions.

Hotheads such as Mesmerith deliver volatile burst from Back row, combining range safety with high damage spikes during sleep or stun windows. Back row is your most protected real estate—fill it with your highest damage and healing priorities after Front Protectors are established.

Common Positioning Mistakes

The most frequent error is stacking too many Strikers Front without Protector coverage, causing quick front-line collapses. Another mistake places multiple Blasters Back without Front damage absorption, letting enemies reach Back row before Blasters eliminate threats. Always maintain at least one Protector or durable Striker Front before maximizing Back damage.

Use our team formation planner to visualize row balance before battles. Pair positioning knowledge with Aspect synergy builds and Animaster team compositions for complete team optimization during the Evolution Test.

Row Density and Flex Slots

Flex slots fill remaining grid positions after core Front Protector, Back damage, and synergy units are placed. Mid row flex slots suit Controllers when enemy compositions require disruption, or Explorers when utility outweighs raw combat contribution in exploration-heavy play sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I override suggested Trait row placement?

The game allows placing units in any row, but doing so typically reduces combat effectiveness. Follow Trait designations unless testing experimental gimmicks.

How many Protectors do I need?

One Protector suffices for most stages. Difficult encounters may benefit from two Front durable units, but never at the expense of Back row damage or healing.

Where does Mesmerith go?

Mesmerith is a Hothead requiring Back row placement. The sleep CC and burst damage function optimally from range without front-line exposure.

Are Explorers useful in Nexus Battles?

Explorers contribute Mid row utility but underperform dedicated combat Traits. Bench them when optimizing for stage clears and use them during exploration content.

Does row placement affect Aspect synergies?

No. Aspect thresholds count all deployed Anima regardless of row. Positioning and synergies are independent optimization layers.
